Gundog training day.
The Barbet Club of G.B. has arranged a number of training days with experienced gun dog trainer, Mick Cleverly MBIPDT of Corunna Gundogs Our first training day was held on the 23rd May and although with dog training the weather should not be an issue, it is just more pleasant when the sun shines, especially with wet dogs.
Ready for a temperament check.
We started the day spending some time understanding the capabilities of the dogs, which ones were able to swim and their confidence levels in the water, it was easy to see that none liked entering the water with a splash, although that changed by the end of the day. The dogs were then exposed to a starting pistol, which didn't bother any of them at all, and we had also a few bonus booms and bangs from an Ambush Paintball area nearby. We also practiced a weave, which is just having control of your dog when you walk near others and your dog should not be reactive to the other dogs as they pass them.
Mick Cleverly explaing the finer points of whistle training.
A break for lunch meant the dogs had some time out too.
Downtime for the dogs and food for the handlers.
The afternoon gave us another opportunity to do some water retrieves with some cold game as well as dummies and it was lovely to see some of the dogs entering the water with such energy. We also had a most valued lesson on whistle work such as teaching your dog to stop on the whistle. At the end of the day, we had some tired dogs and happy owners as every dog and owner had learnt something from Mick. The training days are all about finding a way to increase your training relationship with your Barbet, and being given the opportunity to be amongst other owners.
Nell showing great promise.
Further training days are scheduled for Sunday 12th July and Sunday 16th August. For further information or to confirm a place on any of the training days please e-mail Wendy@barbet.org.uk or call 01425 474456
